Frequently Asked Questions

Where is your office located?
JBC Counseling & Consulting, LLC provides therapy through video sessions from a secure platform anywhere in New Jersey or Maryland.
What are your hours?
I offer sessions Mondays through Thursdays.
How long are sessions?
Sessions are typically 50 minutes long. The initial session is a little longer, so we can complete your assessment.
What do you actually do in therapy sessions?

In therapy sessions, our goal is to provide a supportive and nonjudgmental space for you to explore your thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. Together, we’ll work on identifying any challenges or issues you’re facing and develop strategies to address them. Depending on your needs, therapy can involve talking about your experiences, learning new coping skills, exploring patterns in your relationships, and setting personal goals. It’s a collaborative process where we work together to foster growth, healing, and positive change in your life.

Do you take insurance?

We have partnered with Mentaya to help clients use their out-of-network benefits to save money on therapy. Use this tool below to see if you qualify for reimbursement for my services.

What is your cancellation policy?
As my client, you will receive appointment reminders 48 hours before our session. Therefore, I uphold a 48-hour cancellation policy. You must reschedule or cancel all appointments through your client portal. Phone calls, texts, or emails are not an accepted form of cancellation. Please be aware that insurance does not reimburse late cancellations or missed sessions.
What age ranges do you work with?
I work only with adults over 18.
Do you work with women? Men? Couples?
I work with adult women.
Do your clients receive assignments to work on between sessions?
As a therapist, I provide clients with homework assignments tailored to their individual needs and therapeutic goals. These assignments are designed to reinforce new coping skills and support the positive changes made during our sessions. They are an essential part of the therapeutic process, helping clients integrate and apply what they’ve learned between sessions.
What modalities do you use in your client work?

I use a variety of modalities tailored to my client’s needs. These include Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy, Mindfulness, Brainspotting, and Solution-Focused.

In addition, it is common for me to incorporate Hypnosis, Role-Playing Psychodynamic, and other modalities for a particular purpose at various times.

What do you feel about psychotropic medication?

As a licensed therapist, I do not prescribe medication. Medical doctors, certified nurse practitioners, or physician assistants prescribe medication.

I do not pressure clients into seeking medication therapy, nor do I medication-shame clients who choose to use medication therapy. Your choice is always respected.

What are your specialties?
I work with Black women who are struggling with anxiety, past trauma, low self-esteem, stress management, and relationship difficulties.
What is your professional training and experience?

I am a lifelong learner who loves science. That’s why I majored in Zoology. I have a master’s degree in rehabilitation counseling from the University of Alabama, Birmingham. And a PhD in Human Services from Capella University.

I received my counseling licenses to practice in AL, MD, NJ, and VA via my master’s degree in counseling.

I am a certified hypnotherapist, clinical anxiety treatment professional, clinical trauma treatment professional, and Anger Management Specialist II.

Will you tell me what to do with my life?
I’m more of a guide than a dictator. Let’s work together to figure out your best path.
Will you help me become a superhero?
I can’t promise superpowers, but I can help you tap into your inner strengths and resilience.
Do you have a spell to make my boss less annoying?
No spells, but we can work on coping strategies to deal with difficult people.
Is it true that therapists have all the answers?
We don’t have all the answers, but we can help you find the answers that are right for you.
Will you tell me the secret to eternal happiness?
The secret is there’s no secret! But we can work on finding joy and fulfillment in your life.
What does the “JBC” in your practice name stand for?
As a licensed therapist, I understand the profound impact of loss and the journey of healing. When I was in the process of naming my company, I experienced the heart-wrenching loss of my mom. In the months that followed, as I navigated through the pain and sought a way to honor her memory, inspiration struck. The initials “JBC” in my company’s name stand for Jennell Bush Carter, a tribute to my beloved mother, whose legacy continues to inspire and guide me in my work.
